Train 428
Title:  Train 428
Description:  Here is GTW Train #428 enroute from Battle Creek to Detroit, MI on June 27, 1963. The photo was shot at Royal Oak. The units are 4542-413_ and ____. This train operated as a turn, with two crews (one going out each day) from Milwaukee Jct. to Battle Creek and return. It was ordered for 6:30 a.m. each day. The crews worked every other day. The train would be made-up either at East Yard or Ferndale. The train, #427, would set-out and pick-up at Pontiac, once in a while set-out at Durand, and set-out and pick-up at Lansing and yard at Battle Creek. It would then get its eastbound train with the same engines and caboose and operate as #428. Eastward they would usually just pick-up at Lansing, and set-out and pick-up at Pontiac. At Detroit the train would yard at Ferndale and the power and cab would be taken to the roundhouse at Milwaukee Jct. The cab was kept in the Houlihan (the small wye inside the Port Huron Wye at Milwaukee Jct.). Generally this train made it over the road in 12 to 14 hours...sometime it would take the full 16. It usually handled a lot of auto parts and often empty coal hoppers back from Lansing. This was a no nonsense high-paying job. It ran 278 miles, so that was almost three days pay in one! It took high seniority to hold it; but believe me, the shippers got good service!

GTW Tr. #549 with GTW 4540 & 4542
Title:  GTW Tr. #549 with GTW 4540 & 4542
Description:  Chuck reports: "It is the morning of January 5, 1971. Yesterday, we worked north from Pontiac to Pigeon, MI on Train #549 (Work Extra 4540) and tied-up in Pigeon. We stayed overnight in the Pigeon Hotel, which was only a block to the west. This morning, we will switch the elevator and the C&O interchange and then depart south as the Work Extra 4542, Train #552. Two items to notice...on our train. We have one of the former ATSF steel cabooses. These were originally very rough riders; however, the ones used in local service were re-equipped with archbar truck removed from the GTW wooden road cabs and rode much smoother! Also note in the back left, the joint C&O(PM)-GTW Freight House. This stood directly across from the joint C&O-GTW el-shaped depot, which was behind our train. I think that this may be the only photo that I ever shot that included the freight house. It was very small and I believe did not have any windows. I wish that I had taken a photo of it specifically...no foresight! Also in the background is our southbound train, which we left in the siding south of the diamond. This siding incidentally also had an adjacent dirt with wood-cribbing loading platform to unload flatcars and boxcars. The platform was on the north end of the siding and on the west side of the track. You see how much snow is on the units...you should have seen them by the time we got back to Pontiac! I had to crawl out the window and shovel off the walkway! I wanted to take a photo of them then; but it was dark, and I did not have a tripod...another missed opportunity. Lastly, you will notice the white flags on both units...they just came out of the roundhouse that way and the engineer just never removed the unnecessary ones. The PO&N was always my favorite job!"

Ex-RI units ready to go
Title:  Ex-RI units ready to go
Description:  The always-in-trouble RI was being dismantled, and the GTW was looking for a bargain. In April 1980, the GTW purchased a total of 12 GP-38-2s, painted out the big "The ROCK" on the sides, renumbered them into the 5850 & 60-series, painted a small GT logo on the side of the cab, and immediately put them into service. Displaying a little class for for the media, the railroad had the units, still in RI blue, spotted, once again (just like the previous order of new GP-38-2s) on the "Circle Track" for photos and then put them to work. GTW locomotive engineer, Larry Bolton, caught them during the special display.

GTW 4917
Title:  GTW 4917
Description:  On September 29, 1984 Chuck was called to deadhead from Milwaukee Jct. to Pontiac by auto to be fireman on a Passenger Extra (PX). We had units 4917 & 4918. The train actually made two complete circles as I recall. Both trips ran consecutively on the same day. Chuck worked the first, which ran from the yard in Pontiac, we backed down to the depot and everyone climbed aboard. We then ran to Pontiac Yard, over the Pontiac Belt Line and across the Romeo Sub to Richmond. From Richmond it was down the Mt. Clemens Sub to Milwaukee Jct., and then up the Holly to Pontiac. The second trip did the exact same thing.

Milwaukee Junction
Title:  Milwaukee Junction
Description:  We are aboard one of the former CV GP-9s at Milwaukee Jct. on 2-9-85. Lets see...the diamonds were still in, the tower was still standing, the Houlihan Wye was still in (that is the track that the caboose GTW 79133 [former DTS 133] is sitting on), the GP-9 had not yet been rebuilt or scrapped, D&M Yard was still open, Ryerson Steel was still in business on the Holly Sub and still receiving steel by rail, Chevrolet Gear & Axle and the Chevrolet Forge Plants were still in business and shipping and receiving by rail, and the Chevrolet Gear & Axle boiler house was still receiving coal by hopper and producing its own steam.

Frightening
Title:  Frightening
Description:  This shot is of the GTW Jordan Spreader that was based out of Pontiac back in the '90's (pictured at Rattalee Lake Rd.). Normally, the GTW used its spreaders as snow plows; however, on this occasion, it was "ditching" on the Holly Sub between Linden and Andersonville. Chuck reports that it was a very interesting day; but, that it was also very nerve-wracking! One would think that work trains would be easy duty. In actuality, they are probably some of the most tedious difficult jobs an engineer ever catches...and usually they go to the youngest men off of the Spare Board. Whether it be rerailing, unloading or picking-up ties, spreading or cleaning ballast, unloading rail or other track material, or ditching or plowing snow, these are very critical jobs that take the utmost concentration. Often workers are very close to the moving equipment and one foul move could cost an employee his life. Also, they generally work all day and without a fireman, the engineer never even gets to leave his seat.
